Our story
You should know who you’re buying from.
There are thousands of anonymous storefronts selling pet things. You can’t tell who is behind any of them. We’re Deni and Helen — a husband and wife — and this one is ours.
The work
What we are making.
Plucky Pet draws cats doing what cats actually do. Not cats in hats, not cats holding wine glasses, not cats saying things. A cat asleep in a sink in the middle of the afternoon, because that is where the warm is.
The first collection is about everyday life with a cat, and the title is the whole brief. Every scene has to be something that already happened in somebody's house — recognisable before it is funny, and funny only because it is true.
We are building a body of work rather than a catalogue. It opens with three prints and it will grow into other objects as the work earns them, each one held to the same question: would the person who lives with this cat recognise her in it?
The objective is narrow on purpose. Not to be the biggest pet store, and not to sell one of everything — to make a small number of things worth keeping about an animal who was never going to sit still for a portrait.
Where I come from.
This part is mine — Deni’s. I grew up in Brazil, around real poverty, and I knew children who were on their own: no parents, no one coming. What that left behind is a permanent attention to anything that arrives in the world with nobody in its corner.
What I love.
The attention has a shape now. It is animals, and it is the people who take them in — the moment someone brings home a frightened, unwanted creature, before it trusts them, before it gives anything back, and then earns that trust one patient day at a time.
That is who this brand is for. The animal is the occasion; the person who chooses it is who this is about.
Why it reaches me.
I became an immigrant. I moved to a country that was not mine, adapted, and earned my place with no guarantees at the start. So I know in my own body what it is to arrive somewhere frightened and need to be taken in.
Under that is my faith. I believe we were all once lost and taken in, and an animal coming out of hiding is a small version of the same story. It is why I think this one is mine to make.
Our family.
Helen and I are not chasing a logo on a wall. We want to build something we believe in that earns steadily, so that our family is safe for years. There is a symmetry we did not plan and will not pretend away: we are making our family safe by making an animal safe, for someone who is making that animal safe. One story, at three scales.
What we actually believe
The education is the product.
Anyone can sell you a box. The hard part is knowing what to do with it on day three, when she still hasn’t come out. That part is free, and it always will be.
Quality is the floor, not the flex.
Well-made isn’t a feature we advertise. It’s the minimum for a thing an animal sleeps in, and we don’t get credit for it.
We never oversell.
No product calms a cat, cures anxiety, or swaps her personality. The honest promise is a more confident version of the cat you already have.
We put community first.
We support local shelters and stay close to the people doing the quiet work of welcoming an animal home. Adopted or bought, you’re welcome here — we do the good deed, we don’t demand it of you.
What we can and can’t prove
We’re early. We have no sales results and no customer numbers, and we’re not going to invent any — that’s exactly the kind of thing this brand exists not to do. What we do have is real: a large body of what cat owners actually say about this problem in their own words, and guidance built from five behaviour-science books — John Bradshaw’s Cat Sense, Bradshaw & Ellis’s The Trainable Cat, Jackson Galaxy’s Total Cat Mojo, Pam Johnson-Bennett’s CatWise, and the ACVB’s Decoding Your Cat — rather than from opinions. When real results exist, they’ll replace all of that. Until then we lead with her words and our reasons, never with numbers we made up.
