What type of bed do cats like best?
The one that matches how your cat already behaves. A hider needs a covered cave with a sightline; a percher wants height; a leaner wants a bolster. Watch where she sleeps now — cats vote with their bodies, and the best bed is the one shaped like the spot she already chose.
“Best cat bed” lists fail because they answer for the average cat, and no one owns the average cat. Cats vote with their bodies: the spot she sleeps in today is her honest review of what she wants — enclosure, height, or something to lean against. What relaxes a cat is not a bigger or costlier bed but a space she cannot be surveyed in — layered hides, height and blind corners (Bradshaw, Cat Sense, ch.8; ACVB, Decoding Your Cat, ch.3).
For hiders — the shy cats, the new adoptions, the under-the-bed residents — the answer is a covered cave that passes the Peek Test: visible room from inside, one-step retreat, a shell that never wobbles.
One structural rule transfers to every type: firm shell, soft floor. Structure she can trust, bedding that holds her scent — and wash that bedding rarely, because her own smell is the “safe” label.
